Syllabus -Electrical Measurement and Instrumentation

Electrical Measurement and Instrumentation is an essential course for Electrical Engineering students since it deals with the measurement of electrical quantities as well as the usage of instruments in a variety of applications. This course covers measuring techniques, analog and digital instruments, transducers and signal processing techniques, errors and uncertainty analysis, and resistance, inductance, capacitance, power, energy, and frequency measurement.

UNIT – I: ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENTS

  • Measurement system, Characteristics of instruments,
  • Methods of measurement, Errors in Measuren ent & Measurement standards,
  • Review of indicating and integrating instruments: Voltmeter, Ammeter,
  • Three phase Wattmeter, Multimeter and Energy meter.

UNIT – II: MEASUREMENT OF R, LAND C

  • Measurement of low, medium and high resistances,
  • insulation resistance measurement,
  • AC bridges for inductance and capacitance measurement.

UNIT-III: INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMERS

  • Current and Potential transformer, ratio and phase angle errors,
  • design considerations and testing.

UNIT-IV: ELECTRONIC MEASUREMENTS

  • Electronic voltmeter, Multimeter, Wattmeter & energy meter.
  • Time, Frequency and phase angle measurements using CRO;
  • Spectrum & Wave analyzer. Digital counter,
  • frequency meter, voltmeter, multimeter and storage oscilloscope.

UNIT-V : INSTRUMENTATION

  • Transducers, classification & selection of transducers, strain gauges,
  • Thermistors, Thermocouples, LVDT, Inductive & capacitive transducers,
  • Piezoelectric and Hall-effect transducers,
  • Measurement of motion, force, pressure,
  • temperature, flow and liquid level,
  • basic concepts of smart sensors and application.
  • Data Acquisition Systems.
